Alopecia Areata
Alopecia Areata: Alopecia is the medical term for bald. Areata means patchy. This patchy baldness can develop anywhere on the body, including the scalp, beard area, eyebrows, eyelashes, armpits, inside your nose or ears.
Alopecia Totalis: The person loses all hair on the scalp, so the scalp is completely bald. It starts from one part to all over the body.
Signs and Symptoms
- Without any rash, redness or scarring only patch of area where sudden hair loss occurs.
- This pathy area gradually increases.
- Patches are round or oval shapes.
- Eye lashes loss.
- Beard loss like some completely shaved that area.
- Bands like hair loss and the lower part of the scalp.
- Brittle or red nail bed.
- Sometimes Symptoms like white or grey area at or near hair fall area.
- Sometimes hair regrows to some extent and starts falling at another area.
- Cold or winter is the trigger point of AA.
- In alopecia totalis all hair loss occurs with brittle nail or cricket nailbed.
- Cadaver hair – in this hair breaks before reaching skin.
Causes
- Iron(Anemia) and Vitamin D deficiency.
- Autoimmune Diseases – Rheumatoid Arthritis.
- Multiple sclerosis.
- Cancer treatment
- Asthma
- Thyroid diseases
- Vitiligo
- Typhoid fever.
Treatment
Pediatric Patient
- Steroid application of ointment or lotion.
- Minoxidil application.
Above 10 years of Patient
- Corticosteroid injection in the dermal layer of the bald patch. It should be repeated every 4 to 8 weeks.
- Minoxidil application at patchy bald areas 2 or 3 times in a day regrows the hair in the bald area.
- Steroid application at patchy areas can regrow hair. This is effective in pediatric or children.
