This a very common skin condition that influences your mind and confidence when you take a look at yourself. For those who have entered or just passed their teenage, perhaps you would be able to relate to what acne exactly mean on your skin. They are a common occurrence among the teens and more than five percent of adults too suffer from it.
It is one of those skin conditions, which occurs without your initiation, but it does affect your appearance and in turn your attitude and self confidence. Acne is a chronic and inflammatory skin condition that causes spots and pimples, especially on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms.
Acne occurs when the pores on the skin, which opens to hair follicles, are clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. The oil glands produce a certain amount of oil/sebum regularly in every individual.
Pimples develop when there is excessive production of sebum or when the sebum carrying skin cells and hair cannot reach the skin surface because of blocked follicles. This leads to the development of a plug, which appears as whiteheads or blackheads.
Types of Acne(Pimples)
- 1. Whiteheads: These are small skin coloured lesions. They remain under the skin surface and not associated with pain.
- 2. Blackheads: These are small and appear on the surface of the skin as black coloured lesions because of oxidation of the sebum. there are not painful and can be extracted.
- 3. Papules: The pink or skin coloured bumps appearing on the skin are called papules. these are bigger than whiteheads and rarely associated with pain.
- 4. Pustules: Red at the base with pus head on the top, pustules are visible on the surface of the skin. and are associated with mild pain because of the inflammation.
- 5. Cysts: These type of acne are big, filled with pus and thus are quite painful. They can cause pigmentation and scars.
- 6. Nodules: Embedded deep in the skin, nodules are solid, large and painful pimples that protrude out of the skin surface. these lesions also cause pigmentation and scars on healing. they can be chronic and recurrent in nature.
