Direct rays of the sun cause havoc to our skin and result in dark spots, age spots, tanning and various other forms of pigmentation.

- 1. Birthmarks: These are an irregular blemishes on the skin which are found at birth or develop a few weeks after birth.
- 2. Freckles: Freckles are brownish flat spots seen predominantly on face and also on other sun exposed areas like neck, arms, shoulders etc. It is commonly seen in fair skinned individuals.
- 3. Lentigines: Lentigines are brownish spots larger than freckles seen on any part of the body and at any age. They occur primarily due to increased melanin formation.
- 4. Melasma/Chloasma Faciei: Melasma is seen as dark brown patches on sun exposed areas like cheeks, forehead, nose, temples etc. This can affect both men and women, although it is most prevalent among women. Melasma is commonly found on the cheek, nose, lips, and forehead. It is more common in females. Changing hormonal may cause this, it may happen during pregnancy or genetic disposition.
- 5. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: This results from increased melanin production due to a number of reasons including acne, dermatitis, skin injury, infections, allergic reactions, medications, or certain diseases.
Hyperpigmentation
Overproduction of melanin causes a medical condition hyperpigmentation, sometimes also simply referenced to as pigmentation. Generally it is harmless but from a cosmetic and aesthetic point of view it’s a nuisance. Hyperpigmentation is the result of either an abnormally high concentration of melanocytes that produce melanin or when melanocytes are hyperactive. Hyperpigmentation can affect any part of the body including the face, hands, and neck.
