Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum Contagiosum is caused by virus of poxvirus of same name of disease.
After infection symptoms acquire between 2 to 7 days and last for 6 month also.
It is contagiosum, and can be transferred from 1 person to 2nd. The individual host can spread on its own whole body.

Symptoms:

  • Non itchy lesions.
  • It worse only in autoimmune disorders, cancer, tuberculosis patients.
  • Raised, round, skin-colored bumps.
  • Small bumps — Typically under about 1/4 inch (smaller than 6 millimeters) in diameter.
  • Bumps with a small dent or dot at the top near the center.
  • Sometimes Itchy, ink bumps.
  • Bumps on the face, trunk, arms or legs of children.
  • Bumps on the genitals, lower abdomen or inner thighs of adults if the infection was sexually transmitted.

Treatment:

It clear virus on it’s own if immunity of patient is good. There is no need of treatment. If it is not cured on it’s own then it needs treatment.

  • Cantharidin (beetle juice): Your dermatologist applies the beetle juice to each bump in such a way that a water blister forms. Blister appears on each treated bump within 24 to 48 hours. As the skin heals, the bumps clear by the time.
  • Cryotherapy
  • Curettage
  • PLD(pulsed dye laser): Effectively treat the number of Molluscum more than 15 to 20 in 2 min of time. Bumps clears in 1 month of treatment. For face 1 week and other areas of the body, the skin tends to heal completely between 2 and 4 weeks.
  • Topical Therapy: The doctor applies creams containing acids or chemicals to the bumps to induce peeling of the top layers of the skin. Topical therapy creams that contain iodine and salicylic acid or potassium hydroxide, Trichloroacetic acid (TCA), Topical Podophyllotoxin cream (Condylox), Cantharidin (Cantharone), a blistering agent that a doctor usually applies.
Prevention:
  • Hand washing with warm or soap water.
  • Avoid sharing clothing and sport equipment.
  • Avoid touching and scarring at the injected area.
